Pam Kinzie – Artist Spotlight

Please introduce yourself and your art medium.
Hello, I’m Pam Kinzie and my art medium is ceramics.

What is the most challenging aspect of being an artist?
Finding enough contiguous quality time for making!

What do you hope viewers take away from your artwork?
I hope that the ceramic forms are compelling – that viewers can emotionally feel the forms and want to pick up the pieces and hold them.

Are you an early bird or a night owl?
I used to be a night owl, but now I’m an early bird, preferring to engage in my work first thing before other responsibilities start to grab my attention.

What role does experimentation play in your creative process?
It’s a balance – making enough ‘tried and true’ for the galleries, and exploring new techniques, forms/subjects and glazes. For example, I’m exploring pit firing now and it will be a while until I have things I can show. Also, with each piece, I am ‘listening’ to how the clay is behaving and am responding to that. I find learning and discovering to be a compelling part of making.

If you could take a week off from your regular life to immerse yourself in learning something new, what would it be?
Naked Raku firing (and no, you don’t have to take your clothes off to do it !)
