Jane Welles – Artist Spotlight

Please introduce yourself and your art medium.
I am Jane Welles and I paint the landscape in oil and gouache.

What is the most challenging aspect of being an artist?
For me, the hardest part about painting is making the paint say what I want it to do. Not every painting is a home run, and it doesn’t seem to get any easier. The more I know, I realize there is even more I need to learn, it is a never-ending process.

What do you hope viewers take away from your artwork?
That there is beauty all around us. The Japanese have a good word for it, shinrin yoku, it means forest bathing. When I am out in nature painting, that’s how it feels, like I am totally immersed and all my senses are activated!

Are you an early bird or a night owl?
I’m a night owl, but I don’t paint at night. I am always watching art videos in bed at night!

What role does experimentation play in your creative process?
Experimenting does play a part in being creative, but I think with painting, 98% of the process is just doing it. With painting, you have to put in the brush miles.

If you could take a week off from your regular life to immerse yourself in learning something new, what would it be?
I would take a week off to go up to paint the Tetons and Glacier Park, and all the landscape in between!
