Carol Black-Addyman – Artist Spotlight

Please introduce yourself and your art medium.
Hello, my name is Carol and I’m a printmaker. I work primarily in linocut.

What is the most challenging aspect of being an artist?
I find that periods of creative dryness are a challenge. Printmaking is my livelihood, so the need to be constantly creating can sometimes be a little stressful. Thankfully, the periods when I feel uninspired are usually short lived! When they do strike, I can use the down time to reprint blocks that have sold out, clean the studio, and have lots of tea breaks.

What do you hope viewers take away from your artwork?
I hope my work reflects some of my own joy to the viewer, some of my love of color and form. My work is really just a response to the beauty I find in nature, and I want the viewer to feel a similar sense of wonderment.

Are you an early bird or a night owl?
I am most definitely an early bird! This probably comes from keeping chickens for the last 15 years. When the sun goes down and the chickens go to bed, I’m right there behind them! I love the early morning hours.

What role does experimentation play in your creative process?
As a full time artist, finding time for experimentation can be challenging. My focus has to be primarily on the drawing, carving, and printing process, and then there is marketing/social media, commissions, galleries, art fairs, etc. When I do have time, I experiment with different types of printmaking, like collagraph and gel plate printing.

If you could take a week off from your regular life to immerse yourself in learning something new, what would it be?
I would like to learn how to sew. And to read Latin. I will need more than a week 🙂
