Kelly & Janis Quinn – Artist Spotlight

Please introduce yourself and your art medium.
Hello. We are Janis & Kelly Quinn and our niche is creating art using recycled metal objects.

What is the most challenging aspect of being an artist?
This answer probably changes year by year. Right now, the challenge for us is finding the time to be out working in our shop. Although retired, we seem to fill all our moments up with a multitude of many things!

What do you hope viewers take away from your artwork?
We have heard from many, many customers that our artwork makes them feel happy. That is the biggest gift we can receive, and we greatly appreciate the comment. We also love the curiosity of our work and watching customers study a piece and try to figure out what all the parts and pieces were in their original state.

Are you an early bird or a night owl?
We definitely fall into the early bird category!

What role does experimentation play in your creative process?
That’s a hard question, as isn’t everything we create an experiment in process? Probably the biggest experimental challenge is in how best to put pieces together. As we use all old recycled metal, we are often faced with how to best clean the metal, shape it and get it to fit into the piece we are creating.

If you could take a week off from your regular life to immerse yourself in learning something new, what would it be?
For Janis it would be learning Spanish. Kelly chooses learning how to have more time camping in the great outdoors!
