Carol Toomey’s love for ceramics started many years ago when she took a class in high school. It is fair to say that it was her favorite course. Although she took a break from ceramics to raise a family while working full-time, Carol was able to return to her passion of working with clay through a small studio in 2016.
As a result of the studio closing in 2018, Carol decided to purchase equipment to open her own studio and continue supporting the local art community. Sierra Foothills Pottery provides three kilns which are available for use by fellow ceramicists through Kiln Share.
Carol’s love for playing with clay includes throwing on the wheel, hand-building, and sculpture. She creates functional and whimsical pieces made using porcelain or stoneware clay, with high quality lead-free and food safe glazes. Growing up in Southern California and spending many days at the beach, she enjoys creating art with a beachy-vibe. She loves to experiment with glazes, and texture. “I see texture in nature and incorporate it into my work. Tree bark, leaves, flowers, and rocks from my yard have all been used in my process.”
Carol’s work has been displayed throughout numerous local Placer County artist events such as Railroad Days in Colfax, Creative Corner Co-op Colfax (current member), and the Holiday Artisan Faire Gold Country Fairgrounds and Maidu. She also holds a weekly senior class every Tuesday and loves watching the excitement on her student’s faces when they see their pieces come out of the kiln.
