Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Susan Stoll and I am a photographer and acrylic painter. My work features the closeup observation of nature. The vast array of colors, patterns, textures, light and shadow to be explored never cease to amaze me.
Why do you do what you do?
Artistic expression is at the core of my being. It is a huge part of who I am and how I see the world. Whether I am painting or on a photoshoot, I am in my happy place. My hope is that my works will inspire others to slow down and take a moment to really see the beauty of nature around them.
A majority of my art and photography feature plants, flowers and hummingbirds.
Describe a real life situation that inspired you.
I am inspired anytime I go out in nature. I have found inspiration in the way the afternoon light graced a dandelion in my front yard, the peaceful surroundings at a botanical garden, the color of reflections upon a pond, or the wildflowers along a hiking trail. Recently, I had to take some time away from photography. The first day that I was able to go out on a photoshoot after the break, a hummingbird was flitting from lotus to lotus and appeared to be looking right at me when I captured its image. I honestly felt like Mother Nature was welcoming me back.
What jobs have you done other than being an artist?
I was a Montessori teacher for nearly 20 years. I also taught art to elementary age students, worked as an art curator, did storefront window displays and secretarial work.
What are your hobbies?
I enjoy hiking, kickboxing, travel, reading and golf.
