    AOTG WELCOMES NEW MEMBER

JANET BECKER • Jewelry: Bold & Playful

Janet Becker has spent decades immersed in the wild, wacky, and wonderful world of wearable art—a realm where materials and imagination joyfully collide. Her work defies convention, transforming unexpected media into jewelry that’s as bold, playful, and distinctive as the people who wear it. More than adornment, each piece is an expression of individuality, whimsy, and joy. Janet shares this passion by leading two wearable art groups in the Sacramento area, creating spaces where artists can experiment, connect, and bring their ideas to life. Her teaching and mentoring reflect her belief that creativity flourishes when it’s shared. In her studio, Janet experiments fearlessly—shaping various materials into lightweight yet durable jewelry designs that tell their own stories. Her inventive, one-of-a-kind creations often pair with clothing and accessories to form cohesive, art-to-wear ensembles that are vibrant and full of life. For Janet, wearable art is not just about decoration—it’s about transformation. Each creation invites us to see fashion as a living canvas for creativity, individuality, and delight.

    MARSHA TOMS • FUSED GLASS

Marsha Toms is a fused glass artist based in Roseville, California. She has been creating unique fused glass pieces in her home studio since 1999. She took a beginner’s class at the Learning Exchange in 1999 and was hooked. It started out as a hobby for Marsha, but she really got serious with her glass art when she retired in 2021, taking numerous classes with nationally and internationally known glass artists, adding her own spin to her work. Marsha enjoys creating both functional and sculptural pieces and has won numerous awards with her glass art. With over 25 years of experience in glass, Marsha continues to take classes and experiment with new techniques.

    MICHAEL MALONEY • PHOTOGRAPHY

After a distinguished 37-year career as a photojournalist, mostly with the San Francisco Chronicle, Michael Maloney is now retired and living in the historic mining town of Sutter Creek, California. His striking images attracted the attention of the San Francisco Chronicle editors who offered him a staff photography position in 1980. While at the Chronicle, Michael shot a wide variety of assignments which took him literally around the world. With the fast-paced, always-a-deadline world of news and sports photography behind him, Michael is now enjoying the slower pace of nature photography. Michael is self-taught, starting back in the days of film and darkrooms to currently using the latest in digital cameras and photo processing. His first love was landscape photography, however that took a back seat to a career in photojournalism when in 1973, he landed a job as a staff photographer at a small newspaper in the San Francisco Bay Area.

    WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBER!

    PAM KINZIE • Ceramics

The joy of working with ceramics came to Pam Kinzie later in life, following retirement from a career in architecture and construction management. With a great affinity for nature, working with earth (clay), fire, color, and pattern was a natural fit.  All of Pam’s work is hand-built.  She considers her work a dance between herself and the clay, intertwining her manipulations with the response and natural behaviors of the clay, seeking a balance; stillness and movement equally reflected in each hand-made vessel. Pam’s work has been shown at the Granucci Gallery, Blue Line Arts, Art League of Lincoln, Courtyard Suites Gallery, California Conference for the Advancement of Ceramic Arts, and Sierra College Student Art Shows, where it has won several awards.

An avid gardener and outdoor enthusiast, Michelle’s muse is Nature. Creating work that communicates the beauty, harmony and serenity that can be found in nature is a primary focus in Michelle’s paintings. A sense of place has always played a dominant role in Michelle’s work. She was born in California, grew up in Hawaii, went to art school in New Mexico, California and Oregon, and spent twenty-one years in Colorado. Michelle used her fine arts degree to forge a career in graphic design, a look that is easily felt in her work. “COLLABORATIONS & OTHER MEDIUMS”

“Collaborations & Other Mediums” is the featured March wall at AOTG! There is constantly something new at Auburn Old Town Gallery! The artist members are always experimenting with new mediums, techniques and partnering up to create unique new projects. Check and it out, and explore all the amazing art! And speaking of something new… Welcome to our new members: Barbara Steffen (blown glass), Carol Toomey (ceramics), and Gay Jegers (abstract mixed media).

    WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS!

    Barbara Steffen

A native Californian, Barbara was always intrigued with art in one form or another. She kept searching for “her” medium. It wasn’t until she lit the torch and melted glass for the first time that she knew she was home. Barbara works with a torch, glass tubes and rods, and a kiln to create original, unique, handmade and handblown art using a variety of Italian and American glass rods. The beads are integrated into her designs for jewelry and functional pieces.

    Carol Toomey

Carol Toomey’s love for ceramics started years ago when she took a class in high school. It’s fair to say it was her favorite course! Carol’s love for playing with clay includes throwing on the wheel, hand-building, and sculpture. She creates functional and whimsical pieces using porcelain or stoneware clay, with high quality lead-free and food safe glazes. Growing up in Southern California and spending many days at the beach, she enjoys creating art with a beachy-vibe, experimenting with glazes, and texture. “I see texture in nature and incorporate it into my work. Tree bark, leaves, flowers, and rocks from my yard have all been used in my process.”

    Gay Jegers

Gay Jegers’ primary focus in her early career was textiles. Mid career she spent six years learning Chinese brush painting with watercolors on rice paper or silk. After retiring from her work career, she and her husband moved to Auburn where she began her long desired outlet for expression, intuitive mixed media art. Gay paints to express herself through her art and loves the not-knowing what will show up until it is on the canvas or wooden panel.

    WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS!

Stella Canfield & Carrie Olsen Gerrard

    STELLA CANFIELD

Stella Canfield‘s watercolor art is known for its deep emotional content, the dynamic of the brush stroke and vivacious colors. She creates intuitively and spontaneously in a relaxed, natural way of expressing her individual emotional response to the subject or scene she paints. Her work is charged with the energy of her own life, her passion for people and nature. The inspiration for Stella’s art comes from her appreciation of beauty and her positive view of the world. Stella prefers to introduce symbols, giving the viewers the opportunity to visualize the details. She strives to emotionally involve them as partners, to give them a feeling of the ownership of the painting. She believes that art is a way of spiritual communication. Today Stella teaches watercolor, juries and participates in exhibits initiated by art organizations in the USA, Europe and Asia. She has received many international awards for her work. Her paintings are in several private, corporate, and museum collections in America, Europe and Asia.

    CARRIE OLSEN GERRARD

After years in the Commercial Art World, Carrie Olsen Garrard is finally back in her own home studio.  Through her career in Product Development, Carrie has enjoyed the opportunity of engaging in the creation of  a wide variety of products in a multitude of mediums. In tandem with many  Home Décor, Gift and Garden Companies, she has created products, and gathered cherished experience from around the world. Carrie  returned to her roots, where she finds herself drawn back to the raw, tactile experience of her hands in clay in all varieties and textures. Casting in Stone compounds provides another layer of nuance of color and texture. This reconnection with the medium has reignited her original inspiration, reminding her of the reasons she chose a creative path in the first place. Through her work in clay, Carrie seeks to capture the essence of emotion between subtle human expression and the beauty of nature that surrounds us.

  • Louise McGowan Bezark – Artist Spotlight

    Please introduce yourself.
    Hi, Louise McGowan Bezark here.

Tell us about your favorite art medium.
I am in an exciting, long term love affair with earthy gourds. Not the variety we see at the grocers, rather the hard-shelled cousins of pumpkins and squash. They come in so many shapes and sizes, I use all of them from the tiniest to the largest. They are light weight, versatile, and most people who see my art believe that they are ceramic.

Who/what is your biggest artistic influences?
My mother’s best friend is Japanese and would bring beautiful gifts from Asia to our family. I grew up with lovely silks, lacquered trays and the simple and beautiful lines are ingrained in my entire being.

    What motivates you to create?
I believe that we are all creators, every aspect of life is connected. We create art in every thought, action and word. The importance lies in where we create from, we have a choice to create from our heart in celebration and love or from our angst.

When is your favorite time of day to create?
Early morning is one of my favorite times of day to create art. Combining my two favorite things, art and coffee! Really, there is no time of day that isn’t a good time to create.

Does art help you in other areas of your life?
Is there another area of life other than art? Whether I am cooking, doing laundry, shopping or cleaning, I am always seeing something that inspires my creativity in ways that I can carry with me into the studio.

Welcome our new member DARIEN HAMILTON

Born in San Francisco during the mid 1960’s, Darien was exposed to the bright hues of the then, new color, TV broadcasts and bold designs of the CounterCulture. His artistic parents normalized the idea of making a time and place to create art in their home and provided two and three dimensional media for him to experiment with.
His father was a printmaker and art professor in both San Francisco and later, Sierra College in Rocklin, Ca. His mother balanced raising a willful child and creating beautiful gardens, printing woodblock prints, and painting. Darien went on to pursue art and received his AA degree in the mid 80’s, further refining his skills through intensive studies and studio courses in sculpture, painting, jewelry making and graphics at CSU Sacramento and City College of San Francisco. Later, (1992) he moved to the island of Maui with his new family and worked as a muralist, sculptor, and art director for the themed event and convention industries. On returning to Los Angeles, he applied his skills creating sets and props for Disneyland and Universal Studios Hollywood theme parks. Since his return to the foothills he has been exploring painting, airbrushing and creating various commissions.

  • WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS!

It is always so exciting to welcome new members to Auburn Old Town Gallery, and these four new artists are exceptional in the talent they bring! Stop by soon to view their work!

    CAROL BLACK ADDYMAN • LINOCUT

“My first response to life has always been a need to make art. primarily birds and animals,
and later, geometric patterns. Printmaking allows me to combine both the natural world and geometric form.” From my very first linoprint, I was captivated by the magical alchemy of ordinary linoleum, ink, and paper. Linocut is a printmaking technique similar to woodcut. A design is carved into a piece of linoleum using chisels or gouges. then inked with a roller, the raised areas of the lino representing the design that will show when a piece of paper is laid over the inked surface, and pressed.

    CHARLES BORGARDT • CERAMICS

“I have had a passion for ceramics for many years, using both hand built and wheel thrown techniques to create my pieces.” I have taught at Truckee Meadows Community College, and “Peace of Art” Gallery, adding to my learning, creativity and teaching. I am presently focusing on using doilies to create specific patterns and textures combining various colors and types of glazes. These doily pieces capture the pasts that hold stories of other peoples lives. All of these experiences influence my present creations.

    KIMBER CHIN • FELTING

“Painting with wool is like painting with clouds – wispy and beautifully light. I can blend and mix colors and textures as I feel led, and build a fabric that is small or large, thick or so thin they are transparent. Since I used to spin yarn and knit, felting is an exciting new direction because there is little reliance on the twist of the yarn, or counting rows and stitches. I was also an abstract painter so painting abstract wool pieces was a natural progression. My work is very organic, following the nature of the ingredients, wispy, with holes, but sturdy like a survivor…”

LIV KERR • SLATE MOSAIC ART

“Art, for me, is a journey of exploration and discovery, a deep connection to the world around me. When I create, I liberate color and texture from their external constraints, allowing them to become the focal point of my work. Inspiration and emotions guide me, whether experimenting with slate mosaics or painting with oil and acrylic on canvas, I trust in the process.” Livia Radu Kerr, originally from Bucharest, Romania, now calls Auburn, California home. Her one-of-a-kind Slate Mosaics are meticulously handcrafted, utilizing a variety of materials including stone, smalti (specialized mosaic glass), handpulled filati (artisan fused glass rods), raku, and metal wire. Slate holds a special place in her heart for its strength, delicate qualities, and diverse color and texture options. Livia’s creations are described as bold and powerful, reflecting her zest for life.

The most important and true love of Suzanne’s life is creating jewelry, sculpting forms from sheet silver, bending gold wire just so to enhance an earring, finding and capturing that perfect stone in a framework of interest and beauty and binding them all with fire.

“People who wear my jewelry know and feel the joy of creativity unbound as well as the precision and care needed to make truly wearable pieces of art”.

  • AOTG Welcomes Gourd Artist David Roseberry!

Gourd artist and Sacramento native, David Roseberry, entered the art scene rather late in life. At the age of 38, he created Powerhouse Creations, a one man, primitive southwest art experiment featuring gnarled driftwood carvings, highly ornate walking staffs, homemade rawhide drums and gourds, both rattles and vessels, all largely fueled by the art he had witnessed throughout the southwest. Frank Howell, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Robert Rivera were major influencers to Powerhouse Creations…David worked on many, very successful, large scale gourd festivals. He was credited with having built the largest gourd sculpture in the world, a four character totem pole weighing in at just under 10 feet tall! Today David focuses primarily on birds, flowers and reptiles, creating them using a technique that he calls ‘gourd feathering’ with the most amazing end results.

  • Welcome to our new member! CAROL CROCKETT

As a child, Carol Crockett lived in the California redwood forest, where she spent many solitary hours playing on the soft forest floor beneath those beautiful giants. Carol took delight in the texture of the redwood bark, the unfurling fern fronds, the cool dampness of the moss, and the company of the jays and banana slugs. La Honda Creek flowed past her home and brought an endless variety of formed and shaped earth and wood. These early forest impressions continue to influence Carol’s tile design strongly. Carol moved to San Francisco, where she fell in love with the architectural ceramic works that adorn many buildings. When she saw nature’s influence in the design of these classic ceramic works, she knew that she wanted to make tiles. Carol’s work today includes both decorative and custom-made architectural tiles. Be sure and stop by to see her amazing work!

The unlimited possibilities of creating fantasy and whimsy allowed her to unleash her creative forces using several computer programs.
