Please introduce yourself and your art medium.
Hello, I am Barbara Steffen, and my art medium is glass. I work on a torch to create beads, sculptures, and vessels using rods of glass in many different colors.
What is the most challenging aspect of being an artist?
When I have an idea of what I want to make on my torch, the challenge is getting the molten glass to flow where I want it to go in order to create the vision in my head.
What do you hope viewers take away from your artwork?
I’d love viewers of my art to see the colors and shapes playing in the light, just as I do.
Are you an early bird or a night owl?
I am an early bird… way too early on some days.
What role does experimentation play in your creative process?
I am always experimenting with different shapes and design ideas. I get bored if I have to do the same thing on endless repeat, so I’m always coming up with new shapes, colors, and art ideas to create new products.
If you could take a week off from your regular life to immerse yourself in learning something new, what would it be?
I would love to learn to make goblets, wine glasses, and martini glasses. And that might just be my next big project!
