Sierra Mohr

Fabric artist Sierra Mohr says she “loves to create … stuff”. Since childhood, she has made things. She began hand sewing at age 8, and knitting clothes for my Barbie doll. Her grandmother taught her how to crochet lace edges on hankies. In high school Sierra made most of her clothing (and her best friend’s), made jewelry, played in the school band and orchestra, and participated in the drama department. Doing anything and everything in a creative way is a part of her daily life.

Throughout Sierra’s adult life, she has made and sold things, mostly jewelry or fiber related items. She supported herself by making gold and silver jewelry for 25 years. Now she dabbles in that, along with sewing, knitting, felting, dyeing, spinning, weaving and whatever catches her interest.

Sierra’s eco printed pieces are created with a technique where plants, leaves and flowers are coaxed to leave their natural dyes on a surface such as fabric, paper, or leather. It is a form of contact printing that results in exact prints of the botanicals. Each piece is unique and one of a kind.

Sierra says: “Twelve years or so ago I saw a sample of eco dyeing. I literally thought I had “died” and gone to heaven. Instantly I was excited. I knew I had to learn more about this process. I became obsessed. Well, I did learn. I dyed and dyed and dyed. Every time I do it, it is magical to me. At first it was scarves, then home accessories and re-purposed clothing. I knew I had to take it up a notch. Now I constantly challenge myself to create new and exciting one of a kind garments, bags, accessories, etc. I hope that in sharing my creations with others, they too will be inspired and in awe of the incredible prints the leaves give to us. It is another example of the beauty of nature.”

Her work has won numerous awards at the Nevada County Fair and the California State fair. She teaches workshops and gives presentations at several fiber guilds in Northern California.
